Hidromek addition to The Young Group fleet

0

The Young Group is a family-owned business spanning the full spectrum of property investment, development, construction, management, and leasing. The company was founded in 2008 by Trent and Nakiya Young who have built the company on family values, integrity, and trust to provide a positive contribution to communities and build spaces for businesses and people to flourish. They are leading the way in Tasmania as locals and work closely with all stakeholders to provide quality and value in this space.

‘Driven by a strong local knowledge and extensive industry expertise, our team is committed to shaping places that fuel economic and social success. Working across commercial, retail, industrial and residential sectors, we are focused on delivering innovation and sustainability to achieve a better future for our communities.’ The Young Group

With this mindset The Young Group were open to exploring the Hidromek range of equipment, even though they were unfamiliar with the brand, ‘aside from seeing them beside the highway’ as mentioned by Sean Devine their Operator. They are currently working on a 60M$ warehouse development on 6.5 hectares over 5 years in Hobarts Northern Suburbs. The site will include local breweries with tastings, shops, community centre, cafes and a factory which is adjacent to affordable homes, with stage one starting soon.

Over time, The Young Group have owned a ‘mix of different brands of equipment including Hitachi, Komatsu, Kubota excavators, bobcats, skid steers and a Dynapac roller’ as explained Tim Holloway, Head of Construction. They were looking to expand the fleet to complete some of these new projects and came were approached by Onetrak to consider Hidromek machinery that suited the needs for their operations.

This was the start of the partnership with Onetrak and the Hidromek Brand, back in Oct/Nov 2022. They have added to their fleet with the Hidromek HMK310LC excavator and the HMK110CS roller which are currently being used for their ‘subdivisions, quarry on the farm and the roads that lead to the quarry’ Tim explains.

The have found the Hidromek equipment to be ‘powerful and fuel efficient, with different settings for your power modes and it is on par with other brands, even a bit better.’

‘The driving experience is really good, I’d rate it above a 10 out of 10. Both machines, the HMK310LC and HMK110CS are comfortable, spacious and smoother in the cab, with the HMK310LC excavator being especially comfortable.’

‘Some of the stand outs for us are the touchscreen, the Topcon GPS, the Doherty quick-hitch and the cold box for your drink or lunch is cool.’

‘It didn’t take long to get used to the controls as they are standard. The roller is easy to operate, and it is simple to show someone how to operate it. We were impressed with the safety features which include the lock-on controller and having to be in neutral before you start.’ adds Sean.

‘The visibility from the cab is good due to the cabs design and wide cab angles, and you can also take the padfoot off the roller providing a multi-option, which was one of the reasons for buying it.’

‘Onetrak’s support and service has been great, with Onetrak’s attention to detail, and relatively quick response time being a highlight. We deal with the service team at the Bridgewater Branch. They have been very responsive and great to deal with’ Sean adds.

Sean concludes ‘We get questions all the time about the equipment, with curious people including truck drivers wanting to know what the Hidromek’s are like. We are more than happy to recommend Hidromek and Onetrak to anyone asking as we are pleased with the performance and comfort of the machines.’

He was highly respected and loved, even by industry rivals and competitors. He will be fondly remembered by customers, suppliers and industry associates for his reputation for hard work, integrity and honesty, while at times being outrageously funny and entertaining.

Semco was founded in 1994 following a management buyout of a construction equipment dealership equipment at St Marys, NSW by Satch Santilli, Peter Esse and Graham Murphy, which grew into being the Takeuchi distributor for most of Australia.

Semco directors Peter Esse and Graham Murphy said, “Satch’s thoroughly professional approach was underscored by wonderful humour and goodwill in all transactions and negotiations. He was a well-grounded person who respected humanity and had a genuine care for everyone in the ‘Semco family,’ as well sincere consideration for everyone he met.

“He had the common touch; a unique persona that was a mix of helpful, down to earth and humorous. He was always generous with his time, support and sound advice for anyone who was starting out in the earthmoving business. Also rare was his warm welcome for anyone who came through the door and just wanted to chat. This amazing readiness to engage with people at all levels quickly became one of the cornerstones of the Semco success.

“Satch genuinely treated all the staff at Semco as extended family, which produced an enormous level of cooperation, trust and purpose within the company and has been a major contributor to its success,” they said.

Semco will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary this May. The legacy and vision for the future left by Satch will be continued under the management team and the highly experienced Semco staff throughout its own sales and service centres in Sydney, Newcastle, Queanbeyan, Goulburn, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as Semco dealers in South Australia and Tasmania.

CHOICE OF EMISSIONS AND TECHNOLOGY with next generation cat® 315 & 315 GC excavators

0

Versatile, flexible and easy to transport, small excavators deliver big benefits. Those advantages just got bigger with the Next Generation Cat® Small Excavators 315 and 315 GC now with Tier 3 or Tier 4F options.

The 315 and the 315 GC is a 15-metric-ton excavator, part of Caterpillar’s small excavator lineup, sandwiched between the 13-metric-ton 313 and the 18-metric-ton 317. Both machines are suitable for use in a wide variety of jobs and industries such as grade work, slope work, trenching, loading and utility work due to their compact radius design.

Caterpillar has redesigned every aspect of the 15-ton excavators to deliver better performance and better match customer needs similar to the 20-ton machines, while giving customer more choices, to choose their emissions preference as well as technology options.

Tier 3 and Tier 4 options

Like many other larger Next Gen Hex range, the 315 and 315 GC have the option of a Tier 4F engine, or a Tier 3 Engine that does not require Diesel Exhaust fluid.

The new fuel-efficient Cat C3.6 engine power these two Next Gen small excavators giving improved performance over the previous 315 F model. Both of these engine choices are backed by the Cat Fuel Edge program. With the Cat® Fuel Edge Program, customers will gain certainty on their biggest operating cost. It’s available when a qualifying Cat machine is purchased – with Product link™ enabled – from any participating Cat dealer. If the machine burns more than the committed fuel consumption threshold*, the dealer will give out a parts credit.

The compact design gives operators the confidence to dig, swing and dump in space-restricted jobsites The 315 is 8% more productive than previous model, giving improved fuel efficiency, while the 315 GC can save up to 15% fuel consumption than previous model. New Smart Mode operation automatically matches engine and hydraulic power to working conditions for maximum productivity and ECO mode to save fuel in less-demanding applications.

Performance Gains

The advanced hydraulic system of the 315 and 315 GC excavator provides the optimum balance of power and efficiency to increase productivity over the 315F L. Its new electronic hydraulic valve delivers significant efficiency. A 10% higher swing torque makes working on slopes and around the jobsite much more efficient, and the drive system easily navigates tough ground conditions and slopes with 14% more drawbar pull.

Both machines are suitable for much more than just utility work or on residential sites. These machines are right at home on even large infrastructure jobs and loading trucks. The new electronically controlled hydraulics have made for both faster control response and better controllability on the machines.

To the customer, the benefit with the 315 GC model is that they are getting F-Series level of performance, but now at a lower price point while still getting the big maintenance savings, the big fuel savings and the electro-hydraulic controls. The 315 GC is the new standard model that is reliable, comfortable and productive. It is ideally balanced to deliver performance, maximize operator productivity and offer the lowest cost per machine hour of performance.

But for customers looking for a 10% boost in swing torque that elevates efficiency when working on slopes and moving around the jobsite, the 315 excavator has technology options like the popular Cat Grade with 3D.

Technology Standards and Options

Delivering superior performance and best-in-class productivity for the 15-ton excavators, the Cat 315 comes standard with a host of productivity enhancing technologies to increase operator efficiency by up to 45%. Standard Cat Payload provides on-the-go weighing and real-time payload estimates, so operators can deliver precise load targets every time to improve loading efficiency. Payload can be combined with VisionLink to remotely manage production targets. Critical operating data such as fuel usage, payload summaries and fault codes are tracked by VisionLink to help boost fleet management efficiency.

There is also a range of additional factory fitted options to increase productivity and expand grading capabilities for the 315. Grade 2D can automatically guides digging depth, slope and horizontal distance to quickly and accurately reach desired grade. Increasing safety when excavating in confined spaces, the new 2D E-fence keeps the front linkage within a predefined work area to avoid hazards on the jobsite as well as standard cab avoidance.

For advanced grade demands, Cat Grade with 3D includes an additional 10-inch high-resolution touchscreen monitor which has powerful graphics and customizable 3D views brings the job-site design to life giving operators the ability to hone in on the right perspective, and there is a range of intuitive embedded features to help them be more productive.

The new Cat GRADE with 3D system has the ability for operators to quickly create in-field 2D and 3D designs if a job-site design is not available. This enables customers to utilise Cat GRADE with 3D on smaller projects to build designs such as swale drains, trenches, pads, basement cuts and finishing. The in-field design can use the cutting edge as a survey tool, or operators can input the exact plan, elevation and profile of the design which improves work quality and prevents rework.

The factory 3D option also means operators can start work quickly and safely with no need to install or remove 3D system components and eliminating cable connections adds to the reliability.

Cat GRADE with 3D systems comes with option of a single or dual GNSS receivers securely mounted to provide real-time position and heading of the machine.

For customers that do not need the added technology features for the work they do, they shouldn’t have to pay for something they will never need. If anyone is in the market for a machine that gives a solid performance with the benefit of lower up-front acquisition costs, lower owning and operating costs and unmatched dealer support, then check out the 315 GC.

All-new cab elevates comfort

Both Cat 315 and 315 GC operators will experience a new, 13% larger cab designed with improved ingress/egress to boost comfort and productivity. The full-sized cab offers a low-profile design plus large front, rear, and side windows with narrow cab pillars to offer 40% greater visibility compared to F Series small excavators, enhancing safe operation.

The standard rearview and right-hand-sideview cameras further improve visibility of the operating environment. Owners can also upgrade to 360-degree visibility to easily see objects and personnel around the excavator in a single view. Improved sound suppression lowers interior noise levels to improve operator comfort. Operators can make hands-free calls through the new standard radio’s Bluetooth connectivity for personal devices. Advanced viscous mounts significantly reduce cab vibration compared to previous models, reducing operator fatigue.

Lower Operating Costs

These two models also lowers maintenance costs by up to 25%, making it the right fit for rental, municipal, and general all-around excavating applications requiring dependable performance and low operating costs.

The 315 and 315 GC feature a host of design upgrades that simplify maintenance to deliver up to 25% lower costs than their F-series counterparts. The excavator’s new hydraulic oil filter delivers improved filtration and a 50% longer change interval at 3,000 hours. New anti-drain valves keep the hydraulic oil clean during filter replacement to improve system longevity.

Operators can now conveniently track filter life and maintenance intervals through the in-cab LCD monitor. All daily maintenance checkpoints, including engine oil, are easily accessible from ground level, making it safer.

Cat S∙O∙S system on these machines allows for quick and easy extraction of fluid samples for analysis, simplifying maintenance.

With more standard technology at better price points, a wider range of machines to better match applications, and huge reductions in fuel consumption and maintenance costs, the Next Generation excavator range delivers a better bottom line for all customers.

The power and the passion: how Jones Quarries Group is making things happen

0

Dan Jones, founder and Managing Director of Jones Quarries Group, is living proof of what can be done when you put some drive behind a dream. After cutting his teeth in the family business, he followed his gut, taking a confident leap out on his own to chase down the possibilities of reaching new markets, offering an exciting range of new products.

“It all began with my grandparents, who started Country Improvements Proprietary Limited in the 1970s,” Dan explains. “Pa was building dams and carrying out rural property works, and Grandma took care of the office side of the business. By the early 80s, they’d started buying up the quarry and then, over the next decade or so, they moved into selling the boulders and crush products.”

Like many in this industry who grew up around machines, Dan’s family album reveals an early interest in the family trade. “We were always around the gear. So, I was probably drawn to it because of that,” he shares. “And once I started working with Pa full time, that interest grew even further.”

For Dan, that spark grew into a real passion. And, as he studied for his business degree, he developed a clear vision for exploring new possibilities. “That’s when the quarry really changed direction,” he shares. We started making different products, but I also started to see gaps in the market. And that’s ultimately what led me to set up Jones Quarries Group.”

Not only did striking out on his own give Dan some wriggle room to grow, it also took a bit of the pressure off his grandparents. “I saw the potential of growing the business – different product lines and different gear for different projects. It really excited me,” he shares. “Obviously my new venture works alongside the existing business. But starting my own thing let me take on that bigger portion of the market, without Pa and Grandma having to worry about new clients coming through the door and all that extra workload.”

When it came to gear, Dan says his Pa’s always kept things pretty simple. “He had a couple of old dozers in the early days. Probably Komatsu and some of the old Caterpillar dozers,” he recalls. “Later he started buying wheel loaders and excavators. Never a huge amount of gear at any one time. Just upgrading when he could afford it.”

Daniel Jones with his dad John Rees.

In buying his first machine, a brand new Kobelco SK380XDLC, Dan was glad to have the benefit of his Pa’s experience to guide him. “I’d seen him buy both new and secondhand gear,” he says. “We were constantly getting mechanics to work on our secondhand gear. That’s more money and more downtime the business has to consume. I learned pretty quickly that, if you can afford to, it’s best to go with new gear.”

Add market conditions into the mix, and buying a new machine truly was a no-brainer. “Obviously it was a big overhead for a new business. But with the pricing of secondhand models at the time, while I had to wait a few months for the new digger to arrive, the cost was about the same, just without thousands of hours on the machine,” he says. “Then there’s the warranty and backup service. I was happy to be patient. And I was confident we had the work in front of us to be able to make things work.”

It’s a decision he’s glad of every time he starts up. “I can jump in, do my pre-start, and know that she’s going turn over and there’ll be no leaks, or anything like that,” he shares. “And, say there were any issues, that’d be fixed straight away. It’s a good sense of security, knowing you’re not risking any downtime. That’s essential for a new business operation.”

The machine is part of Kobelco’s heavy duty range, which is specked up to be suitable for quarry applications. “It’s essentially a SK350 with extra steel added for strength and stability,” Dan explains. “It’s perfect for our purposes. It had the right oil flow, the right pressure, the right weight to handle our attachments. We got quotes on a few different makes, and Peter Moore – and all the guys at our local Kobelco dealer, STM Trucks & Machinery– were great to deal with. We felt reassured this was the right equipment for our application and we’re very happy we went with the Kobelco.”

Daniel Jones with Peter Moore from STM.

Dan says working with STM was nothing short of fantastic. “I reached out to them for a quote, and Peter was the sales rep who contacted me. After I began dealing with him, I spoke with a few guys in our industry who also run Kobelcos and, funnily enough, they also dealt with Peter and couldn’t speak highly enough of him,” he shares. “It was good to know we were in safe hands. If ever we have any issues or questions, they’re on the phone straight away. The service is second to none.”

In the end, Dan says his purchase decision really came down to a combination of factors. “They were very competitive on price, which, being my first digger, was pretty important for me,” he explains. “And the warranty was among the best offered. But honestly, it was the overall feel I got from being at the STM yard dealing with Peter. And even the office staff there created a warm feeling for me and my partner.”

With downtime being any business’ biggest risk and cost, Dan reckons backup service is key to success. “We need production to run as consistently as possible to keep us on track,” he says. “Knowing that you’ve got a team around you who’ll get you back on the ground as quickly as possible is very important.”

Daniel Jones and Peter Moore

Any defence against downtime obviously includes maintenance. “Obviously we do all our own pre-start checks. But STM are handling any major upkeep of the machine,” Dan says. “So far, they’ve been fantastic to deal with. They show up when they say they will, which is very important. If we’re waiting around thinking somebody’s on their way and they never arrive, that’s time we could have been using the machine and generating income.”

In terms of attachments the Kobelco spends most of its time set up for sawing. “We’ve got two saws – one has three blades, and one has four. Basically, first you saw one direction with the triple blade. Then you swap attachments to the four blades, putting your crosscuts into it.,” Dan explains. “So, the idea is to get a perfect dimensional grid without having to mark every individual cut using a single blade, which really speeds up the process.”
Such specialty gear could only have come from a handful of places. “There’s only a couple of guys doing it, but it was Mick from Earthmoving Attachment Tools that built ours,” Dan says. “Pa had bought from him before and the feedback from people who had bought his saws for similar applications was great. So, we were very quickly pointed in his direction.”

For hitches, Dan has stuck with Geith. “I’ve got a Salmon GP bucket, and we went with the Geith because that’s the same hitch we had on our other digger,” he explains. “That way we knew all the attachments could be used interchangeably without any modifications. My grandfather’s always used Salmon – now known as SBA – and they’ve got a good relationship. So, we were keen to keep that going forward.”
Dan also has his Pa’s haul to dip into. “He has just about any style of bucket and ripper that you can get without getting too crazy with modifications,” Dan says. “So, yeah, I borrow bits of gear now and then. That’s, the beauty of having the same size hitch as his digger.”
Working together, the businesses serve a pretty broad customer base. “Obviously the larger blocks we produce are generally used for retaining walls. That might be someone working in their backyard, all the way up to a big civil project,” Dan says. “So, we’re not targeting based on the dimension or product. If they inquire with us, we’ll take on the order, as long as we can produce it. It’s exciting to see people use our products in ways we may not have thought of.”
Right now, Dan’s wearing a lot of hats, from Managing Director through to operating and being the first point of contact for sales. But that won’t always be the case. “We’ll definitely have a sales team at some point,” he shares. “But I think it’s always good to chat to your clients directly and build that relationship. It creates trust and means you understand their needs.”

Dan’s father is also currently upskilling to take on a new role within Jones Quarries. “He’ll eventually be operating the machine full time,” Dan explains. “He obviously has had a lot of experience in mines over the years, but more in digging and loading. The sawing application takes a bit of getting used to. So, right now he’s learning to operate the saws, and eventually he’ll be the main operator. Then we’ll put on another staff member to take over his current role.”

In terms of getting work, Dan’s approach to social media has proven to be a real asset. “A lot is word of mouth via a decent local client base. But one thing that’s really working well for us is our social media presence,” he shares. “Our promotion via our Instagram page is winning us a lot of work. But the key is, I’m never directly trying to sell the products. Just sharing what we do each day in the quarry – because I love it and people are interested. And now a lot of the inquiries coming through the door mention they’ve seen our page. We’re sending product up as far as the Gold Coast now. So, our reach is definitely growing.”
Surely the fact that Kobelcos look the business doesn’t hurt when it comes to stopping the scroll. “Presentation’s so important for attracting the right type of clients,” Dan says. “It demonstrates pride in your work. And I do think the Kobelco colour stands out from the rest. There’s no doubt about that. Drive past any work site and you always notice the Kobelcos first.”
Dan was also keen to get the machine sign written with the company name. “That was a no-brainer,” he says. “There’s a lot of people seeing our equipment and our products and our operation in the quarry now that previously wouldn’t have. So, we need to make sure we’re doing everything to a high standard. A fleet of well-branded, beautifully maintained machines will attract the best staff in the future, too. Separate us from some of the competition.”

In terms of that future expansion, Dan is taking a level-headed approach. “I’m not looking to set the world on fire straight away,” he laughs. “Just to grow the team and increase production at a steady rate. Build a good client base. Build a good following on social media. Build a recognisable brand. We don’t have to be the biggest necessarily, just a brand people know and respect, so when they think of sandstone, they think of us first.”

With sandstone, there are set volumes you can extract each year, but Dan says they’ve got plenty of room to ramp that up. “We’re operating well under those volumes at the moment,” he explains. “So, there’s definitely opportunity to increase production. That’s the biggest goal; to maximise output and offer a new range of exciting products. Not just the standard stuff we’ve done previously. That keeps things interesting for everyone working with us.”

Kobelco is definitely putting power behind Dan’s passion. “Since getting that machine, production’s increased at least 30 to 40%,” he shares. “If we can add another machine to the fleet in the next 12 to 18 months, we’ll be pushing a 60- 70% increase. And if we can maintain our margins at those increased rates, we’ll be in a good position to keep growing for the next four to five years at least.”

In the longer term, Dan’s keen to bring more of his operations in house. “I’d like to have our own fleet of trucks,” he says. “We use a lot of subcontractors. And they’re great, but I’d love for us to handle everything from the haulage to the quarry operation, to the sales side of things. It’s easier to serve your clients when you know, off the top of your head, what time a truck’s going to be in a certain place, who the driver is, and what material they have on at a certain time. Just makes for a smoother operation, overall. So that’s going to be important for growing the business.”

With so much going on at work, any downtime Dan enjoys is spent at the gym. “That’s my main outlet,” he shares. “You can’t beat it after a stressful day. I prefer a simple life. I love the gym. Love getting to the beach when I can. Enjoying time with family. Living pretty low key, really.”

So, as someone living the dream, what’s Dan’s advice for someone looking to set themselves up with their own venture?
“Don’t be scared to take on risks other people might tell you not to,” he shares. “There’s plenty of people offering advice who haven’t taken those risks themselves. But the mentorship you need is from people who are operating where you want to be. Otherwise, follow your heart and trust your instincts. If you’re passionate, there’s a lot more chance things will work out.”

How’s that for good advice.

Powerful and rugged with less maintenance

The new excavator’s reinforced structures ensure long-term durability in harsh digging, truck loading, and hammer applications. The Cat C9.3B engine’s 14 million hours of service attest to its long-term reliability.  Three engine modes match excavator power to the demands of the job while saving fuel. Power mode delivers maximum power to meet the most demanding tasks; Smart mode automatically matches engine and hydraulic power to digging conditions to lower fuel consumption. Reducing engine speed to a constant 1500 rpm, Eco mode minimizes fuel consumption.

Synchronized 1,000-hour oil and fuel filter service intervals reduce downtime. The extended intervals also eliminate labor cost for nine oil and fuel filter changes and parts cost for 27 oil and fuel filters over 10,000 machine operating hours compared to many competitive 30 – 40-ton excavators.

High-ambient temperature capability of 52˚ C, cold-start capability at -18˚ C, and the ability to work at up to 4500 m above sea level make the 340 suitable for virtually any environment. Auto hydraulic warmup in cold temperatures gets the machine to work faster and prolongs the life of machine components. The air intake filter with pre-cleaner features high dust capacity, and a high-efficiency hydraulic fan offers optional automatic reverse to keep cores free from debris.

Product Link™ collects data automatically. View information like location, hours, fuel usage, idle time, maintenance alerts, diagnostic codes, and machine health online through web and mobile applications. Maximizing machine uptime, Remote Troubleshoot and Remote Flash allow dealers to remotely connect with the machine to diagnose fault codes and update operating software.

Simple, comfortable operation

From Deluxe to Premium, Next Generation cab trim level options are available. Deluxe cabs come with a heated air-suspension seat, and Premium cabs come with a heated and ventilated air-suspension seat. Both have a tilt up left-hand console for easier access in and out of the machine.

A touchscreen monitor and jog dial offer quick navigation through machine controls and provide easy access to the machine’s digital operator’s manual. Keyless pushbutton start is standard, and Bluetooth® key fob is available. An Operator ID passcode allows for engine starting, and Operator ID can quickly save and restore joystick button, response, and pattern preferences for individual operators.

Optional Cat Stick Steer makes travel and turning much easier. A host of standard technologies – Cat Payload on-board weighing, Grade Assist for maintaining grade, and 2D Grade with depth and slope indication – elevate operator efficiency and machine productivity. All Cat Grade systems are compatible with radios and base stations from top third-party technology suppliers. Operators can store up to four depth and slope offsets to quickly cut to grade without a grade checker. Auto Hammer Stop warns operators after 15 seconds of continuous firing and then shuts off the hammer after 30 seconds to prevent wear and tear. Auto Dig Boost and Auto Heavy Lift increase bucket penetration and lift capacity by 8%, and Lift Assist helps operators avoid tipping the machine.

The experts at Viva Energy Australia, Shell Macro Distributor understand that construction work is never easy. Construction workers are often under pressure to meet demanding deadlines —which is why selecting the most appropriate lubricant for the job, or equipment at hand, plays a vital role in maintaining the equipment uptime and keep engines running for longer.

The right engine oil lubricant can improve a machines performance on site and ensure projects run smoothly. While, choosing the wrong lubricant for your engine can cause breakdowns and accrue costly repairs and maintenance, quickly putting the equipment out of service and causing unnecessary downtime on a job.

Shell is one of the most well-recognised oil and fluid brands in the world, and as the exclusive distributor of Shell brand lubricants in Australia, Viva Energy has worked tirelessly to streamline the process of selecting the right lubricant for your equipment.

Whether it’s an earthmover, excavator, tractor-loader, compactor or dump truck, Shell have developed a unique product range that assists operators in ensuring careful management of their engines. When developing a new lubricant, Shell Lubricants undergo rigorous rounds of tests, in the widest possible range of conditions to ensure products are developed for the real world.

The Shell Rimula R4 range are key products for protecting the integrity and efficiency of a machinery’s engine to ensure performance and longevity. As part of the development process for today’s Shell Rimula, based on the API CK-4 engine-oil specifications over 160 million kilometres of road-tests were run, t in the USA, Europe, China, Australia and other markets.*

“During the development process, Shell tests its engine oil formulas exhaustively,” said Dr Jason Brown, Global Technology Manager for Heavy Duty Engine Oils. “We use these tests to improve and refine the additive package and enhance oil performance across its lifetime so that it delivers industry-leading protection from the moment of top-up right through to the next oil drain.”

Shell Rimula heavy duty diesel engine oil uses the most advanced 15W-40 oil technology to create exceptional resistance to corrosion, wear and oxidation while producing lower vehicle emissions. It is versatile enough to provide the convenience of a single oil and suitable for virtually all engine ages and vehicle types, while reducing engine emissions.

Protecting the performance of exhaust emissions control systems is not only important to ensure that equipment comply with legislative requirements, but it also ensures efficient operations. For example, blocked diesel particulate filters (DPF) can increase fuel consumption. Shell Rimula R4 L is formulated with reduced levels of ash and sulphur to help maintain the efficiency of the latest technology.

The Shell Rimula R4 range allows construction operators to plan for engine maintenance cycles with confidence that the highest quality lubricants are being used to optimise engine performance in line with OEM requirements. Operators should also refer to OEM product manuals guidelines to understand recommended service intervals. Some equipment may have a service interval of 200 hours, while others may be up to 500— regardless, it is best practice to keep ahead of service intervals to ensure equipment is operating at peak performance level.

Businesses seeking real time support can receive a free consult on what lubricant is optimal for their engine through the Viva Energy Technical Help Desk (Shell Lubricant Specialists). As one of the Gold Coast’s fastest growing equipment hire companies, Ace Rental has found a niche in supplying products hard to find elsewhere, as well as quality, on-time conventional equipment to a demanding work sector.

In the 20 years since Ace Rental was founded by Company Director, Mick Sheldon, it has built a strong reputation for its reliability. “If there is one thing I have learnt it’s that this is a service-oriented industry – anyone can offer equipment for hire, however, not everyone can offer quality equipment at an affordable price, as well as customer-tailored solutions.”

As part of a team of 32, Fleet Manager Dave Keane oversees a diverse assortment of machinery – excavators, graders, backhoes, water trucks, posi-tracks, a bulldozer, a compactor, as well as traffic management items. Operating predominantly in southeast Queensland in both the commercial and residential subdivision field, Mick says that in addition to their varied fleet of equipment, the skill level of their machine operators is extensive. “We have managed to employ staff that are extremely talented in what they do. Our clients are rest assured that when they hire equipment from Ace Rental, not only do they get a state-of-the-art late model, but also a highly skilled operator to suit.”

Ace Rental pride themselves on maintaining a five-year turnaround on their equipment which keeps them up to date with all the latest technology. Mick considers this to have changed significantly in his years of operation, particularly the inception of 3D GPS which they now run on much of their gear. A five-year changeover of machinery also keeps Ace Rental in line with pollution requirements – another growing movement in the industry – ensuring all machines offered to customers operate with controlled emissions. Mick adds, “Because the price of fuel has skyrocketed in recent years, we now need to take that into consideration when purchasing machinery. It’s why we run three new Volvo EC machines as they have one of the best fuel burns on the market,” – all of which come equipped with tilt hitches from Doherty Couplers and Attachments.

Ace Rental’s hire packages are on point.

Doherty D-Lock Tilt hitches have been fitted to all excavators in Ace Rental’s fleet, from 13.5T up to 30T machines. “We have tried a few different brands; however, Doherty has been the most reliable and most durable.” Mick’s customers agree – while working on subdivisions in Windaroo and Coes Creek, Paul Ciesiolka, Managing Director of Nulla Contracting praised their Ace Rental package, “We find the Volvo excavators paired with the D-Lock Tilt hitches to be extremely versatile due to the ability to switch over attachments quickly, as well as being low maintenance and cost effective.”
