BEETROOT ‘BARON’ WINS TOYOTA MATERIAL HANDLING PROMOTION

Toyota Material Handling Australia Forklift Shoot Winner Handover - 12th September 2019

A Melbourne market gardener recently became the lucky winner of Toyota Material Handling’s promotion to win the purchase price of any new Toyota walkie stacker or electric pallet jack up to the value of $15,000, purchased between June and August this year.

Daniel Savage of Savage Gardens said the fourth-generation family business was seeking a new electric pallet jack and evaluated several brands before arriving at a Toyota BT LWE130 model. “We needed a pallet jack for our truck and looked at some other brands, but they didn’t have the turning circle we wanted,” said Mr Savage. “Also, we have had many Toyota forklifts in our business over the years and found them to be extremely reliable. We thought about trying to save some money up-front by going to a different maker but in the end, we said, ‘No, if the Toyota pallet jacks are like their forklifts, they’ll pretty much last forever’. So, we rang-up Ross.”

Ross Hourigan, Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) area sales manager, Victoria, said Savage Gardens’ decision to buy the Toyota BT LWE130 electric pallet jack was carefully considered. “They’re a family business so they think hard about what they spend their money on,” said Mr Hourigan. “We went through a process to help them select a unit that best fit their requirements for the tasks they were doing,” said Mr Hourigan. “We put a demonstrator model on their site and showed them what the controls do and how to operate it safely, and then left it with them for a couple of days to practise its operation.”

The Toyota BT LWE130’s narrow chassis is renowned for its excellent manoeuvrability in confined working areas and Savage Gardens’ Daniel Savage said he found this feature particularly appealing. “The turning circle on the other brands we looked at was too wide. It was too limiting for us,” Mr Savage said. “When Ross gave us the loaner we were impressed at its lock in tight spaces, it turned beautifully, and we also found the Click-to-Creep function to be really good.

“The boys fell in love with it – and I like it, too – so we went from there.”

TMHA’s Ross Hourigan said it was Toyota’s famed quality, durability and reliability that eventually won-out in the selection process. “We know that Savage Gardens also trialed a couple of other brands but in the end, they went with Toyota because they could trust the performance. Their Toyota forklifts have proven to be very reliable and durable in the past and they expect the same will be the case with the Toyota BT LWE130 electric pallet jack.

“I suspect our machine may have been a bit more expensive, but they decided it was worth the investment. They felt that the little bit extra for the Toyota would end up paying itself back and more, in the long-run.”

The Toyota Means Business “$15k Back” promotion winner was drawn randomly, and it fell to Ross Hourigan to deliver the good news. “When I heard Daniel had won it, I got on the phone to him. He was pretty excited when I told him. He said he’d have to give up buying Tatts Lotto tickets because he’d used up all his luck. We had a laugh about that.”

Mr Savage said he was quite surprised to hear the news. “I actually had no idea. I only knew about the Toyota Material Handling fuel card that was part of it,” he said. “When Ross rang me and told me I’d been picked out as the prize-winner and would be getting the pallet jack for nothing, I was pretty chuffed. It was quite unreal.”

Mr Savage said the business grows an assortment of vegetables, and that Toyota Material Handling has been part of its history for a long time. “We are fourth-generation vegetable farmers and over the last 20 years many Toyota forklifts have helped our business grow and deliver produce for large-scale retailers such as Woolworths and Melbourne Markets.

“We grow about 20 different types of produce but we specialise in beetroot and spring onions.

AUSSIE STOCKYARDS PUTS TOYOTA HUSKI TO WORK

0
A busy West Australian stock fencing company has substantially increased productivity and time-efficiency with a new Toyota Huski Skid Steer Loader.

Aussie Stockyards, based at Wagin, 230km south of Perth, commissioned the 730kg operating load Toyota Huski 5SDK-9 skid steer loader in March 2017 to load trucks and prepare the ground on upcoming jobs for fencing installation.

The Toyota Huski skid steer levels and clears the ground, and has an auger attachment to quickly and cleanly drill post-holes. It also has pallet forks for unloading trucks.

Galvanised steel fencing for sheep and cattle stockyards is manufactured on the job site as continuous panelling, using a coil feed-line machine which can now be loaded on and off the back of any truck using the Huski.

Company owner Troy Watt said the Toyota Huski had increased efficiency, by reducing the time needed to prepare the ground before erecting a fence.

“It has also given us greater flexibility,” Mr Watt said.

“We have a Palfinger crane attached to our main truck, but having the Toyota Huski means we don’t have to dig post-holes by hand when working under sheds and such.

“We’ve been very busy in the last few months and the Toyota Huski has helped us keep up with demand.”

Mr Watt said the Toyota Huski was absolutely performing to expectation, increasing his satisfaction. “I have always wanted one and now I’m glad I do!” he said

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) Perth area sales manager Dan Rhodes said the innovative Aussie Stockyards application highlighted the versatility of the Toyota Huski range.

“It is a pleasure to see one of our loaders help the operator of a thriving business achieve more output in a day, with less physical stress,” Mr Rhodes said.

Toyota’s Huski 5SDK-9 SSL has been proven across Australia. It has a 3.4-litre Toyota 2Z diesel engine delivering 44kW, an operating load of 730kg and a dumping height at 45 degrees of 2290mm.

Standard safety equipment includes the Toyota’s Safety System and Multiple Safety Lockout System.

TMHA offers a comprehensive range of Huski skid-steer loaders, from the compact 4SDK4 to the powerful 5SDK11.

AUSSIE EXTREME … A CLEAN STORY FOR A DIRTY INDUSTRY

0

Over the last decade, Australian Pump have been on a constant program of product development for high pressure cleaning equipment to suit the earthmoving and mining industry.  Their launch of the “Mine Boss” series of diesel engine drive machines to 5,000 psi proved a winner, not just in Australia but in the Middle East, Africa and south east Asian countries all the way through to Mongolia.

The new Extreme series, taking pressures and flows higher to provide more cleaning “whack” to key projects is another breakthrough for this dynamic and innovative Australian company.

“We found that a lot of the applications involving the cleaning of big plant needing a combination of pressure and flow to get the job done fast.  Time, or the reduction of cleaning time was the big issue”, said Lorenz.

They needed to be protected from the weather, built into heavy duty hot dipped galvanised steel frames and provided with serious high pressure cleaning accessories that would get the job done.

The company consulted with iron ore, copper and coal mines and well as major quarry companies to get an idea of best requirements.

THE PUMP IS THE HEART OF THE SYSTEM

‘Big Berty’ Bertolini pumps were chosen because of their heavy duty configuration and features. “Bertolini offered heavy duty 316 stainless steel heads on the pumps in the 500 bar range, big 1” suction ports, top quality ceramic pistons and valves that are designed specially to provide the highest efficiency for the prescribed flow and pressure requirements”, said Lorenz.

Bertolini pumps also offered a very unique sealing system that protects seals for longer than competitors.  Big ribbed crankcases with extra large oil capacity contribute to cool running with the ribs acting as cooling fins.

The whole pump system is driven through with a reduction belt drive for ease and convenience of adjustment where required the engine running at 2,400 rpms.  The pump runs at 1,450 rpm, providing long, trouble free life.

The Aussie Extreme is powered by Yanmar’s TNV series. These are water cooled engines that are found on mine sites all over the country providing power through generation or driving hydraulic pumps for a huge range of mining applications.

Aussie Pumps specified an integrated control panel that provides the machines with full engine protection including an hour meter, low oil and high water temperature.

FRAME DESIGN

Australian Pumps designed a skid configuration so it could be towed by an excavator or dozer if necessary.  They built in fork truck tine slots so that the machine can be lifted on and off trucks and, lift eyes to enable it to be slung as well where appropriate.

Incorporated in the design was a 60 litre stainless steel break tank with low water shutdown, accommodated in a convenient spot in the unique cube design.  The first prototypes were acclaimed by both mining contractors and big mining company corporations as well.   A 50 litre fuel tank was also incorporated in the design to allow extended dry running for 8 hours.

All machines now have an integrated flashing safety beacon, double insulated wiring, dual pole battery isolator and are supplied with a self contained fire extinguisher.

The pumps are fitted with ASP (Aussie Safety Protection Kit) that kit includes a safety valve, that will blow off in the event of an over pressure spike.  That protects the machine and the operator!

A thermal dump valve is fitted to enable the machine to dump water in the event of extended running on bypass, thus protecting the pump from overheating or cavitation.  A fully adjustable unloader that enables the operator to check the pressure is also included.

Time is money in cleaning mining equipment so accessories that get the job done fast are important.  Aussie Pumps have a great range of up to 500 bar turbos that can cut cleaning times by as much as half.

AUSSIE ATTACHMENT-MAKER DIGGING TOYOTA FORKLIFTS

High-quality local machinery attachment manufacturer, Digga, has taken delivery of a new fleet of Toyota Material Handling forklifts – including eight Toyota 8FBE20 2-tonne 3-wheel and a Toyota BT RRE160M reach forklift (all electric) – to keep the heart of its material handling operations pumping at its Yatala, Queensland-based 12,500 square-metre facility.

Toyota has been a proud business partner with Digga for an extensive period, supplying Toyota Material Handling equipment to it over 20 years and, in turn, specifying Digga buckets for Toyota Huski skid steer loaders.

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) major account manager, Martin Gross, said the relationship with Digga extends back nearly 30 years and reflects a key pillar of the Toyota Advantage – Tailored Business Solutions.

“We have been with Digga since its humble beginnings and watched it grow exponentially during that time to become a highly successful, state-of-the-art manufacturer,” said Mr Gross. “We have been proud to be part of its journey, to learn its business and accordingly supply TMHA equipment tailored to its production needs.”

The latest example of this is the delivery of eight Toyota 8FBE20 2-tonne 3-wheel forklifts that best suit the constricted operating areas created when extra storage was squeezed out from a factory rebuild.

“The 8FBE three-wheelers have a remarkably tight turning circle, with the 2-tonne 8FBE20 model being able to operate in narrow aisle widths, so are perfect for that environment,” said Mr Gross.

“After consulting with TMHA, Digga also specified that the last of their gas-powered forklifts be replaced with battery-powered equivalents.

“The battery technology has improved a lot, they’re a lot more versatile these days, so Digga could see the sense in upgrading from gas to electric, thereby also reducing emissions.”

The specified forklifts also had to stand up to some necessarily tough treatment by Digga’s operators. “They work them hard. They’re packing up hard and tough things all the time. It’s not just biscuits off a shelf.”

Digga supply chain manager, Micah Stevens, said Toyota’s reputation for durability and reliability – another tenant of the Toyota Advantage – and the proven performance of its forklifts in such a demanding working environment was a key reason for the business’ latest additions to its fleet.

“One of the reasons we have stuck with Toyota forklifts and continue to renew our fleet with them is their longevity. Absolutely,” said Mr Stevens. “They have proven to be very reliable machines over a long period of time. They go right through to their service intervals, even if they’re getting on a bit, so we get a good life out of them. The durability is fantastic.

“Because we don’t have much downtime with them, that translates to cost efficiencies for the business overall. Very few of them break down and if they do Toyota’s reps fix them up right away or provide a short-term rental in the interim.

“If something goes wrong, they sort it out. They don’t walk away, they’re shoulder-to-shoulder with you.”

Mr Stevens said the operators also appreciate the Toyota Forklifts, with the newest additions being highly sought-after. “The operators like using them because they’re practical to use. The ergonomics and drivability are fantastic. With our latest machines we literally had guys claiming them straight away and putting all their gear on them. They really look after them and treat them as their own.”

“We’ve come a long way in our partnership with Toyota and our business continues to grow. We have no reason to change that, so will be sticking with Toyota forklifts in the future. Simplistically, they’re a good machine that’s easy and safe to operate, has the features we need and doesn’t let you down.”
